Our Gratitude to Anita Acon for Sponsoring Two Children at Okere Community School
Anita is one of generous children sponsors. Her offer has been matched to support Adongo Lydia and Ogwal Jonathan to complete their childhood development programme at our community school.
Lydia’s mother, Betty Alum is a single mother of 5 children. She is a hardworking woman whom despite her husband’s death in 2016, has singlehandedly managed to raise her children and ensure that they go to school because according to her, ‘’that’s where the key to my family’s success lies and I will try my best to educate them against all odds’’.
Indeed Betty is a shining example of parents who have continued to work hard and ensure that the school activities run smoothly. She often brings material contributions such as firewood and food items on time and she is always available to provide in-kind labor to the school when called upon.
Adongo Lydia is a beautiful child always beaming with smiles. She loves her brothers and sisters and enjoy playing with other children. She is very respectful and loves singing. ‘’When Lydia’s father died, she was only a few months old. I didn’t know how I would raise her. But see, I have made it until now and she is indeed my blessing and testament that one should never give up despite the unfortunate events that happens to them’’ said Betty.
To Anita for sponsoring her, she couldn’t be more grateful. ‘’A stranger supporting my child to get the education she so needs is simply unfathomable. This is a godsend gift and I will play my part as Lydia’s mother because if a stranger can do that, then it means I have a lot more work to do’’.
Ogwal Jonathan is another child who has been matched to get a bursary support from Anita. Jonathan is 4years old and he’s one of the pioneer pupils of Okere Community School. He’s the last born of four siblings.
‘’All the time, I only see hope, joy and a lot of potential in Jonathan’’ said Josephine Akello, his mother. ‘’He is a very resilient child’’ Josephine thinks Jonathan is resilient because she thought she had passed-on the HIV/AIDS virus which she has to her son. ‘’Because I was so sick and weak when I gave birth to him, I thought that maybe something went wrong but all is well and he’s negative’’, Josephine proudly says.
Indeed, Jonathan is one of the few reasons his mother regularly takes her ARVs because she wants to continue being a key pillar in his life. ‘’I want him and his siblings to have a good life. That’s why ensuring that he gets a good foundation in education is an important asset. And I am thankful to the community school for being there for us at the time we badly needed it’’.
‘’I thank the sponsor of my child. Tell that person that her act of kindness means the world to me because I know I won’t live much longer so this support is a big guarantee to my child’’. “It would be great if I could meet that person one day, soon” she requested.
Here is why Anita supports our work
“Widespread poverty is holding back so many from living up to their full potential, and it can be difficult to think of ways you can have any meaningful impact as an individual. So when an opportunity to change even one person’s life presents itself, as in the case of Okere Community School, how can we not take advantage of it. I’m so thankful to the people behind this initiative for giving us an opportunity to make a positive change in our country, one child at a time”.
